French Press – Making Great Coffee

If you want a good cup of coffee, add some oil. Coffee oil is very tasty and improves the taste of coffee, but it is lost during normal filtered brewing process. Coffee made with a French press is not through a filter, so you do not lose these natural aromatic coffee oils. Most coffee lovers agree that a French press makes a superior cup of coffee.

A French press (press and sometimes a coffee) is usually a glass cylinder with a plumber like device inside. Place your coffee grinds into it and pour in hot water. The water should not boil or you will grind your tan, affecting the taste. 200 degrees is the optimum water temperature for a fine cup of coffee. If you have a kettle you to heat your water, remove it from the heat before if starts to whistle. Either that, or let the water boil, but let it sit for a few minutes before pouring in your coffee press. Remember to leave at least an inch of space when filling in the French press.

Coffee beans are ground too fine clog the filter. They are probably all right with automatic drip coffee grinds but the best way to enjoy French press coffee is to grind the beans themselves. Try to grind the beans to a size slightly larger than automatic drip coffee. This may take some practice to get comfortable with your coffee grinder but it’s worth it. And remember that once you grind your coffee beans, they should be used immediately or stored in an airtight container so they will not keep stale.

Let the coffee steep in the water for about 4 minutes. Now it’s time to press the press part of the French. Place the French press on a riffle and a slow, steady push the plunger down. Press too hard or too fast and at worst could be boiling hot water shot all over you. This step is how the coffee grinds forced to the bottom of the container and you are left with delicious fresh-brewed coffee in the upper chamber. You are now ready to pour and serve.

The French press has changed a new face in the last few years. Manufacturers have added French press travel mugs and thermos flasks. As long as you have hot water, you can create a fresh cup of coffee anywhere. And most of these travel mugs and thermos flasks, so that your coffee stays warm longer isolated.
